Alan Wake 2 Review
Horror is found in symmetry, like evil twins or two souls in one body. Light and dark create shadows, and other realms like the Other Side, the Dark Place, and the Upside Down exist. Our top horror artists use this technique to create fear. They turn pleasant dreams into nightmares and make our heavens feel like hell.
Remedy Entertainment has made one of their best games ever, and is one of the best games of this fantastic year. Yes, it’s my favorite game this year. Alan Wake 2 is Remedy’s first full-on third-person survival horror game. It combines all the ideas and mechanics the studio has been developing since Max Payne.
In 2010, the first Alan Wake game came out for Xbox 360. It featured a character named Alan Wake, who gets caught up in a mysterious and dark situation in Bright Falls. The town has a diner, a lady with a lamp (similar to Twin Peaks), and a tired sheriff. Alan lost his wife to a Dark Presence. He fought to bring her back but ended up sacrificing himself to the Dark Presence in the Dark Place. It’s dark. Alan found he could get his stories to life by writing in the Dark Place. The Dark Presence wanted to use its talents and creativity to shape the world in its image.
Alan has been stuck in the Dark Place since 2010. Alan Wake 2 has a second protagonist to add some realism. Increase the number of twos and doubles.
Solve a Deadly Mystery
Meet Saga Anderson, Remedy’s first Black protagonist, known for her notable achievements. If you know the first game, you’ll immediately recognize the surname. Saga is an FBI agent. She works with her experienced partner, Alex Casey. Alex is like Max Payne, with a strong jawline, a serious expression, and a rough voice.
Saga and Alex are in Bright Falls to investigate a string of cult murders that may be connected to the disappearance of Alan Wake. However, things quickly become strange for Saga and Alex as they encounter unexplainable supernatural occurrences. I won’t spoil their first encounter, but it’s one of the most memorable horror introductions I’ve seen. Players can quickly switch between Saga and Alan.
Saga is battling cultists and other possessed beings in the real world of Bright Falls. Saga relies on limited weapons and ammunition. She cleverly uses her flashlight to defeat enemies to eliminate a dark shield surrounding them. Once the shield is gone, she swiftly finishes them off by shooting them. I thought the enemies were too tough to defeat on normal difficulty, but I had a better time playing on the easier “story mode.”
Survival Horror Game
This game is a survival horror where you face multiple enemies. You can use grenade-type weapons, but they are rare and should be saved for tough boss fights. As Saga, you’ll explore enchanting forests, solve peculiar puzzles in charming old houses, navigate eerie fairgrounds, and more. You’ll also encounter nightmare sequences for thrilling boss fights along the way.
Saga, similar to Alan, is quite responsive. However, I frequently wanted to scream due to their dodge mechanic. The game has no on-screen indicators to show when an enemy is about to attack, even if they are invisible. I often felt it was unfair because sometimes I would dodge too early or too late. Regardless, the combat is intense, smooth, and often gives a disturbingly realistic feel. Debris flies, bodies react to bullet impacts, and more.
Explore Two Worlds
Alan is currently residing in a nightmarish version of New York City. Alan, surrounded by mysterious whispers of his name, relies on his writing abilities to reshape the world and break free. Only some shadow aspects are dangerous, but it’s hard to know which ones will harm you once you’ve observed them for a while. This uncertainty creates constant tension because you can’t predict if they will attack. Alan keeps his flashlight ready as the shadows whisper his name and strange incantations about dreams and darkness. It reminds him of the infected floating office workers in Remedy’s previous game, Control, which takes place in the same universe. Here’s a fun fact: Alan wrote the creepy incantation that all the office workers recite.
In Alan’s nightmare version of New York City, he can rewrite scenes and change the plot within those scenes. He does this from his imagination’s writers’ room. The mechanic is fun because it uses Alan’s abilities and allows you, as a player, to shape the world by combining different plots and scenes. More information, resources, and paths are now available.
Saga has a special place called the Mind Place. It has a murder board with a red thread and a coffee machine. She can go there whenever she wants. She can use this to keep track of suspects, evidence, and more. Saga can “sense” the truth in what people say, giving her psychic insight. Saga uses evidence to make deductions, which moves the plot forward. Unfortunately, players have limited involvement in her deductions, which simplifies the process.
Alan Wake 2 Gameplay
Alan Wake 2, similar to Control and Quantum Break, combines live-action cutscenes with gameplay. The graphics are excellent; it might take a lot of work to tell them apart initially. A confident team expertly combines lighting, design, and art. They know the world they want to create, the story they want to tell, and the emotions they want to evoke. Alan’s New York has beautiful graffiti, litter, broken lights, and neon signs. It reflects capitalism’s negative effects and decay, parallel to Alan’s past as a successful writer. Saga’s setting is a small town in America, complete with eerie woods, gigantic trees, and creaky cabins. The sound design alone gives me chills, with unexpected jumpscares that make your screen come alive.
Each “chapter” is different, and each set piece needs to be considered separately. Predicting what Remedy will do or expect from you is impossible, so you can’t feel grounded. This studio is confident in its theme, story, and weirdness. They are at the top of their game. A studio rarely has the freedom to create unique titles with excellent production quality and skill.
The directing and performances, especially from our main characters, deserve mention. Alan Wake combines two performers: Ilkka Villi for his appearance and Matthew Porretta (known for playing Dr. Darling in Control) for his voice. Melanie Liburd’s character, Saga, is a brave and confident agent who fearlessly faces danger. She is quickly becoming a fan favorite despite sometimes being unreasonably unemotional.
Alan Wake 2 Game Issues
During the review period, I encountered several bugs. However, Remedy assured me that many of them would be fixed. One issue that stood out was the occasional disappearance of interaction prompts. It meant reloading the page, which could be frustrating as it involved returning and redoing challenging battles. I found a bug on the PlayStation 5 that could break the game. I was told it would be fixed on day one. Besides that, the game worked well on the PS5 in terms of performance and quality mode. It had great DualSense support, providing haptic feedback for guns and immersive elements like raindrops and rivers.
Final Words
Alan Wake 2 is a game that throws you into a world of uncertainty and unpredictability. It challenges you with dark and unexpected situations, making it a survival horror experience. You won’t feel comfortable or safe.
