Arizona Sunshine 2 – Review
Watching a horde of zombies coming at you on your phone is exciting. Zombie games are great in VR because initially, people think it’s easy and not a big deal. They are slow, and you have guns! However, reducing the number of people in the crowd makes the situation less favorable. The distance between you and them decreases, and your ammunition supply diminishes. You start to panic and make mistakes while trying to reload your weapons, with ghouls getting closer to you. Arizona Sunshine 2 effectively immerses you in a challenging survival experience. Although it doesn’t do much else, which can get a bit repetitive, it does succeed in giving the protagonist from the first game more depth and character development, thanks to his Buddy.
The story campaign can be played alone or with a friend. It’s a simple and linear shooter game with about 75% action-packed moments where you fight hordes of zombies and 25% slower but still intense sections where you explore and solve puzzles to collect better weapons for the subsequent zombie encounter. The game doesn’t feel fresh because it only has faster zombies with hats as new enemies. However, they keep making zombie games because killing zombies never gets old.
With satisfying headshot kills, it never gets boring, even without surprises. It’s a really impressive and gory explosion, with a funny sound effect that often makes a zombie go flying in a cartoonish manner. The ragdoll physics can sometimes glitch and make the characters do funny cartwheels. It feels great when I have my aim dialed in and can knock out five or six headshots without reloading.
Keep Track Your Shots
Apart from the improved graphics, the biggest change that stood out to me in the new Arizona Sunshine game is the more complex reloading mechanics. It’s been seven years since the original game, so the upgrade is expected. In the previous version, you could reload one-handed by ejecting the magazine and hitting the gun against your chest to insert a new one. However, in AZ Sunshine 2, the process is a bit different. It would help if you ejected the magazine, use your other hand to grab a fresh one, insert it, and then load a round before you can start shooting. If you need to become more experienced in keeping track of your shots, it’s best to leave one round in the chamber. This way, you can change magazines without wasting time on the cool-looking step that can make you lose a valuable second when every second matters.
You can carry three guns, which gives you lots of choices. At first, I liked using the 9mm guns and carefully aiming for headshots. But over time, I found myself leaning towards a six-shot revolver. It only takes two shots to the body to bring down a regular zombie. You can find a variety of weapons, such as uzis, combat shotguns, and light machine guns. Each weapon has its unique way of reloading. Once, I had a flame thrower and a minigun that didn’t produce a great flame effect. These weapons had unique behaviors. The downside is that I had to eliminate some shotguns and a grenade launcher because I couldn’t figure out how to reload them. There needed to be a tutorial for those weapons.
Gun Choices In Arizona Sunshine 2
Arizona Sunshine 2 prioritizes fun over realism. If you drop a gun from your hand, it magically teleports to your holster. So, if you have two pistols and one runs out of bullets, you can easily let go of the empty one, use that hand to reload, and then quickly draw your second pistol again. (This also applies to a two-handed weapon slung on the back.) Powerful magnets are used to achieve this, and it’s very convenient.
Arizona Sunshine VR
In VR games, it’s common to make mistakes and grab the wrong objects accidentally. It can be frustrating to die because of grabbing a sausage instead of a magazine and trying to use it as ammunition in a gun. It happened to me, and it didn’t felt good. Apart from the zombies taking too long to do nothing and the loading time too long, it’s not a big issue. I like that you can pick up things without bending down, similar to Half-Life: Alyx but with a shorter range. That’s awesome! Ammo is so abundant in this world that there must be a giant rabbit that poops it.
There is so much ammo in this world that it seems like a giant rabbit must be pooping it everywhere.
You can also use melee weapons such as cleavers, machetes, different axes, and even a crowbar (including a Half-Life joke when you pick it up). Sticking these weapons in zombies’ faces for a close and personal splatter is really enjoyable. In Arizona Sunshine 2, using guns is the main focus. However, you might get hurt if you’re close enough to use them against enemies who know you’re there. Additionally, the weapons can break after hitting a few skulls. You can craft grenades, molotovs, and mines for combat. However, you can only carry one at a time, so they are more of a particular item rather than something you use regularly. Crafting can be confusing at first, but it becomes easier to grasp once you understand how to combine pieces.
New Character Buddy, the Dog
Another significant change is the addition of Buddy, the dog. Absolutely! Go ahead and give him some pets! He is a very good boy, as our character always reminds us when he kills zombies or solves puzzles. He’s a game-changer in two ways. First, you can command him to kill any regular zombie. Second, he can temporarily immobilize a giant zombie. Sometimes, without asking, he will tackle one just as you were about to take your shot. It’s helpful when you’re low on ammo or want to take out zombies without alerting others. Buddy can attack them without being noticed, quickly moving from one to the next.
Yes, that’s correct! It is not an escort mission, so you don’t need to worry about accidentally shooting Buddy or causing him harm with explosives like grenades or Molotov cocktails. Buddy is a true friend who doesn’t mind if you accidentally hurt him. (Also, you can store two additional guns on his cute combat vest!) My only issue with him is that his animations often glitch when you ask him to attack a zombie on the ground. He prefers to wait for them to stand up before taking them down again.
Additionally, Buddy plays a significant role in the story. The story revolves around a desperately lonely character who finally finds a friend, other than the zombies he refers to as “Fred.” The character’s goal is to connect with other human survivors. In the first game, Fred is the only one who hears his constant Army of Darkness-style jokes while he fights enemies. But now, he’s talking to someone who doesn’t want to harm him. His schtick is much more tolerable and sometimes even endearing instead of becoming tiresome. His affection for Buddy feels very genuine.
His Affection For Buddy
This story doesn’t match the fact that you can play the campaign together with others. It works across PC, Quest 2 and 3, and PS VR2. During a mission, I had a partner supporting me. As we started, my character said, “This is the tale of two guys on an adventure.” I was impressed that it was adapting for co-op! But then the follow-up was, “Except one of them is a dog.” Okay. When another person is present, nothing changes. It’s pretty surprising because the whole story revolves around a person who calls themselves the “lone survivor” and their search for any human interaction. He is right there. Killing zombies is more fun with someone watching your back, but the story is better when played alone.
Zombies Attack
There are a few really scary moments where many zombies chase you. There can be many of them at once, and I died multiple times before I learned when to use a grenade or Molotov to reduce their numbers or when to run instead of fighting. Some parts of the game are unexpectedly challenging. I found the campaign to be mostly easy, but one encounter gave me trouble. It was a situation where zombies attacked from both sides of a bridge while I was in the middle. After many tries, I had to lower the difficulty to progress. Playing the entire campaign in co-op might be the reason for this. I haven’t tried that mission with a partner yet, but it would be easier to support each other and watch out for zombies.
Top Zombie Games Ever
When you’re not shooting or collecting loot, the main thing to do is climb. It’s a bit silly because you can quickly grab onto handholds and move around as if there’s no gravity. It’s crazy to watch a co-op partner climb using only their arms while their legs hang there. To launch yourself quickly, pull up using one hand while the other carries a melee weapon or extra explosive. It’s nice to have something else to do while shooting. It leads to fun moments, like climbing on a moving train. However, it is worth noting that there is no mechanism for descending a ladder or jumping down from a ledge. Instead, you are instantly teleported, even if you have chosen the smooth movement option (which I exclusively used).
When it comes to locations, there are quite a few besides the Arizona desert countryside. It’s worth noting that the desert looks very different without sunlight, especially when you have to fight in the dark. There are sewers, stores, train yards, airports, apartment complexes, and more. It creates a good variety. Arizona Sunshine 2 offers a unique experience, although it may not be as memorable as shooting zombies in a carnival in Left 4 Dead. I wish to control my flashlight manually. Sometimes, it turns on automatically in dark areas, but I sometimes have differing views on its timing.
Single Horde Mode Map
Besides the campaign, there is a single horde mode map. This map may be expanded in the future, similar to the previous game. In this mode, you can test your endurance with up to three other players as you face endless waves of enemies. Remember, there are no retreats or dog saves in this mode. The game is both simple and challenging. However, it is a common issue where you need an experienced team to start from a slow wave 1 and progress to the more intense levels. It’s also strange that the game restricts you to a small base area in the center with invisible walls. I noticed more hitching in this mode compared to other modes, although it was still uncommon.

The Verdict
Arizona Sunshine 2 keeps increasing the intensity as waves of zombies approach, giving you a satisfying thrill when your shots and swings hit their mark. In this VR shooting game, you must stay alert and keep track of your bullets while navigating a captivating story about a man and his new four-legged companion. The reloading process adds complexity, making it essential to stay on your toes. The game has a limited variety of enemy types, lasting for 15-plus hours. However, there are enough light puzzle-solving and climbing elements to keep it interesting. The physics glitches add humor, just like the one-liners and co-op antics.
