Dragon Bobby – The Story of a Life Review
In Dragon Bobby – The Story of a Life, you control the main character and follow an exploration-based story. 11 chapters take you through the man’s life, from birth to the end.
The game is about a man named Bobby, also known as Dragon. You will discover his story and experience his life, which has both happy and sad moments. It would help if you found blue orbs in big areas to progress in the game. Once you find enough orbs, you can move on to the next level or area. The game focuses on exploration to progress.
The idea is that gameplay breaks up the story, but Dragon Bobby needs to capture the excitement of exploration. I liked some levels, but my main issue was that the protagonist needed to move faster. I wished there was a run button to unlock in certain parts.
The running speed may seem small, but it becomes more noticeable as the world grows and your travel options stay the same. The environments are fantastic and fun, with hidden secrets and bonus orbs for completionists. However, the dragon’s slow speed makes it less appealing to explore too much. The wide open spaces are huge, but it can be disheartening when you’ve been searching for secrets or orbs for a while. Returning to a familiar place is a punishment because you know it will be a long journey.
Not all levels of experience have the same issue. About three out of the 11 levels have different forms of travel that are less punishing. However, there are some drawbacks to walking in the game. The dragon is limited in where it can go; it moves pretty slowly, and the world can be too big to explore fully and comfortably. Whenever I did something other than playing Dragon Bobby, like watching my wife play a game or watching a video, it made the journey more enjoyable. But it started to feel boring when I focused solely on playing the game.

I also have a complaint about the game’s storyline. Meet Bobby, an ordinary guy with a fairly unexciting life. Although he experiences a few ups and downs, they are brief and infrequent. The story sometimes feels rushed, especially at the beginning, where it starts slowly with details about the character’s birth and childhood. The ending also feels forced. For most of the game, I didn’t feel invested in the main character, and even by the end, I still wasn’t sure if I cared about them.
The story is divided into small sections repeated at each level, but I had trouble finding deeper meaning or thought-provoking moments. Bobby often feels like life is happening to him rather than him taking control. His decisions and memories could be more significant and memorable. The few things that could be seen as necessary do not relate to me or most people.
Talking about the narrative flaws without spoiling the story is hard, but overall, I felt I needed more motivation to keep reading his story. The story needs an exciting beginning and a captivating moment. It could be more interesting, and I need help understanding the story’s purpose.
Dragon Bobby has its positives, to be fair. Beni Games deserves credit for creating an impressive experience, especially considering a single person developed it. I have some small issues with the gameplay that could be due to mistakes during development and insufficient feedback. But overall, they are pretty decent. The exploration and movement are smooth, although a bit slow. The narrative could have been improved with more polishing and purpose. Setting aside all the details, Dragon Bobby is an impressive achievement from a solo developer. I’m excited to see what other games Beni Games will release in the future, with feedback and more experience.
