LEGO 2K Drive Review
I’m always disappointed when I play a new kart racing game because it lacks more innovation. Lego 2K Drive is no exception. A familiar thought crossed my mind as I drifted around corners and boosted off ramps: I’ve played this game before. You’ve probably played this game before. Welcome to Mario Kart! Welcome to Crash Team Racing! This game is called Garfield Kart.
However, Lego 2K Drive’s approach to kart racing feels very well-executed. The controls are solid and easy to handle. You can feel the weight of the vehicle, and it responds well. The turns and drifts are influenced by the size and specifications of your car, giving you good feedback. The courses have a good variety, although I would have liked more focus on shortcuts and alternate routes. The open-world maps in the story campaign feel big and spacious.
Lego 2K Drive Story Mode
Lego 2K Drive’s story mode has a lot of content, but it could be a better thing. The main story missions took me around 5 hours to finish, but there were also many side missions and challenges to explore after completing them. The extra activities in the game are repetitive and require you to do the same missions multiple times on different maps. It is especially true if you want to achieve 100% completion or try to earn more “Brickbux,” which is the in-game currency used for microtransactions.
The story missions in Lego have a fun and lighthearted tone, with quirky flair and silly jokes typical of the brand. Older players may groan at numerous puns, hoping to move on to the next race quickly. Kids will enjoy the constant jokes, and they’ll especially love the main villain and star of the show, Shadow Z. The humor in Lego 2K Drive is more childish compared to other Lego games. They are aiming for a younger audience than usual. Even though I’m a grown man with greying hair, some jokes made me chuckle. It was mainly because Shadow Z’s voice actor, Rene Mujica, embraced the role.
Need for Greed
Lego 2K Drive stands out from other games because of its unique kart-building system. However, this feature has both advantages and disadvantages. It’s amazing! You can create any car, boat, or off-road vehicle you can think of. With the Lego parts you’ve collected from missions, you can make crazy vehicles. Let your imagination run wild! The system is easy to understand, well explained, and has virtually no limits (except for weight limits). In the game, everything matches real-life Lego specifications. If you can build something in the game, you can make it with actual Legos.
To fully enjoy build mode, you’ll need the best parts, which can only be purchased with real money. Unkie’s Emporium is a vibrant store with the most incredible engines, the best-looking tires, and the most stylish drivers. It’s a colorful storefront where you can use the Brickbux you purchased with real money. The game’s micro-transactions are predatory, and I mean it seriously. They ruin a family-friendly game that parents and kids could enjoy. The build system and tutorials are easy to follow. The campaign is lighthearted and funny. You can play offline with friends. It’s an excellent game for kids. However, the focus on making money has affected the overall quality.
Lego 2K Drive Side Missions
Lego 2K Drive is clear about being a game for kids. The story mode in the game always calls you “kid” and reminds you that it’s aimed at younger players. The microtransaction store asks for your parent’s permission, and the expensive bundles, like the $50 coin pack, are very noticeable. The game targets a younger audience, making the high prices and aggressive microtransactions even more bold. I completed the campaign and most side missions in Lego 2K Drive. I only had enough in-game credit to buy three vehicles from the store and couldn’t afford any extra shiny items.
It is a $70 game at launch on current-gen platforms—a $70 children’s game launched with a season pass and an overstuffed micro-transaction-laden store. Ignoring its target audience, is it okay for a game to have numerous additional features that can only be accessed using a credit card when it is first released?
Kart Attack
Lego 2K Drive performed very well on both builds I tested. The budget build (i7-7820X, GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER, 16GB RAM) could almost handle running Lego 2K Drive on the highest settings. However, the framerate had a slight impact, although it was not significant. The i7-7820X build performed well even in split-screen mode, with few performance issues. I had no problems running the game on my powerful setup (Ryzen 9 5900X, RTX 4080, 64GB RAM). The framerate was consistently smooth. Lego 2K Drive is a good-looking game with impressive destruction mechanics. However, it doesn’t aim to push the boundaries of graphics. Today, it’s rare to find a PC game that looks good and runs well when first released.
Lego 2K Drive offers plenty, especially if you enjoy kart racing or Lego. The game runs smoothly and has lots of content to enjoy. The creators have a strong passion for the Lego franchise, evident in the game design and maps. Lego 2K Drive may not be groundbreaking, but it offers enjoyable gameplay that compensates for its lack of innovation. It’s disappointing that Lego 2K Drive has a lot of microtransactions. It makes it impossible to recommend to its target audience.
