The Last Soldier of the Ming Dynasty takes place in the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty. During that period, the southeastern coastal regions were heavily affected by Japanese pirates. General Qi Jiguang was assigned to fight pirates. After completing this mission successfully, he moved north to Jizhou. He dealt with internal rebellions and protected against external threats along the way.
