Turok 3 Shadow Of Oblivion Remastered Review
I was excited about the Turok 3 Shadow of Oblivion Remaster from Nightdive Studios. I had been looking forward to it for a while, even before it was officially announced earlier this year. Nightdive Studios, known for their successful remasters of Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, is now working on a remaster of the third game in the Nintendo 64 trilogy. Its remaster is highly anticipated and considered the most significant release for the studio.
Turok 3 Better than Turok 1 or 2
Why is a remaster of Turok 3 more important than the famous games before it? The reason is simple: a few people played it because it was released in a limited quantity at the end of the Nintendo 64’s lifespan, just a month before the PlayStation 2 came out. It’s a shame because Turok 3 Shadow of Oblivion was one of the most graphically advanced games for the system. It exceeded expectations in some areas. It was better than Turok 1 or 2, but it was ahead. Unfortunately, it was forgotten. This new remaster is a great chance for players to experience it with Nightdive’s excellent quality.
When you start a new game in Turok 2, you’ll quickly notice that the protagonist, Joshua Fireseed, dies shortly after the game begins. In Turok 3, the main characters are siblings Danielle and Joseph. They each have their campaign, stats, and weapons to collect. You’ll want to play the game at least twice to experience everything. Turok 3 is very story-focused and has many fully-voiced cutscenes.
The cutscenes may seem old-fashioned by today’s standards, but imagine watching them as a Nintendo 64 player in 2000. They all have voice acting, which is expected but could be better for 2000. While it’s not Metal Gear Solid, few games had voice acting as impressive as that game did in the past.
Another essential thing to consider is the quality of the character models and the fact that they all have facial animations. When people talk, they open their mouths. Their facial expressions change when they’re sad. Back in the day, some things were unheard of. Even a few early PS2 games, like Max Payne, didn’t have facial expressions. Turok 3 was very advanced for its time.
Turok 3 Level Design
The focus on storytelling changes the level structure in Turok 3. The first Turok game was similar to a prototype of Metroidvania games. It’s no surprise that its development team went on to create Metroid Prime. On the other hand, Turok 2 had more focused objectives and complex levels. Turok 3’s level design is simple and maze-like. The levels are big and varied, except for the first one, which is dull. However, they are mostly clear. If you go out of your way to achieve a goal, you can return to the path you need to take next.
Turok 3 Story Inspiration
Turok 3 is heavily inspired by Half-Life, focusing on storytelling and linearity. You might find this disappointing if you’re used to the previous games’ boomer style with many enemies to kill. The levels have fewer enemies and focus more on creating an atmosphere initially. The higher levels in the game are more exciting and action-packed, just like the previous ones. The player even gets to revisit the first level from the first Turok game, which is a cool throwback. Turok 3 feels less dated than other 90s shooters. Nightdive is responsible for remastering the game, which is why it looks impressive today.
Turok 3 Remastered Visuals
When considering Turok 3’s remastered visuals, you don’t have to consider it a Nintendo 64 game. Nightdive’s previous Turok remasters were astonishing, and this one looks just as impressive. The fog effects are gone, so the game’s huge levels take center stage on the screen. The textures and post-processing effects have been improved to enhance its appearance.
I want to talk about the game’s shadow effects, which have both positive and negative aspects in this case. Turok 3 has impressive shadow effects that look like they belong in a modern shooter, even though the game was released in 2000. They are also a curse because it made the game much darker than it looked in 2000. Sometimes, Turok 3 can be difficult to see if your screen brightness is not set to the highest level.
Turok 3 Shadow Of Oblivion GamePlay
The gameplay is excellent since it’s a first-person shooter played with a mouse and keyboard. The controls in Turok 3’s remaster are simple. Only a few new weapon shortcuts are using the numerical keys. I had a problem while playing the game during Danielle’s campaign. She was instructed to use a grappling hook occasionally. Unfortunately, there is no specific shortcut just for the hook. It is placed in an extra slot on the weapon wheel, which can sometimes be confusing and frustrating. Other than that, I have no complaints at all.
Turok 3 Remastered Sound
Lastly, I want to discuss the sound design. As mentioned before, there are problems with the voice acting. Turok 3 was initially released on the Nintendo 64, so it may seem amateurish and compressed. The soundtrack is different. Nightdive was able to remaster the music to a higher quality, allowing the impressive pieces, including those with Native American chants, to shine after more than 20 years. It’s easily the best-sounding soundtrack in any of the Turok games, even if not particularly the most memorable.
Turok 3 Popularity
Turok 3 is less popular than the first two games in the Nintendo 64 trilogy because it has weaker gameplay. However, it is a highly innovative and greatly underappreciated game that deserves more recognition and appreciation. It was very advanced regarding how it looked, told a story, and designed its levels. The N64 couldn’t handle it well. Nightdive could do it. Thanks to them, Turok 3 now looks and plays much better. Some fans of the previous Turok games might be annoyed by the excessive linearity and focus on storytelling. However, it is still a great adaptation of a game that needs more recognition.
